3d metal-sulfoxide binding: S or O?

3d metals are known to bind sulfoxides predominantly by the O atom, in contrast with 4d and 5d transition metals which show some ambivalence between O and S binding (Re, Ru, Os, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt) as expected from the larger soft acid character of the latter.
Sulfoxide molecules are widely studied in catalytic reactions as substrates, products or catalyst ligands. The recent discovery of a new S-bonded Fe(II)-DMSO complex - [(Cp*-NHC)Fe(CO)(DMSO)][OTf], which acts as catalyst in sulfoxide reduction, raises questions on the mechanistic pathway and the nature of the binding between 3d metals sulfoxides. This led us to explore the nature of sulfoxide binding in the known 3d metal-S binding cases - Cr(0), Cr(II), Co(I), Fe(I), Fe(II), Ni(0) and Ni(II), all of which have reported X-ray structures.
